After a quick shower and change of wardrobe, after sprinting along Rector’s streets in the Rector Helping Hands 5K, a large group of Rector Sports supporters gathered at the Rector gym for a lunch catered by Dawn’s Diner and recognition of newly inducted Rector Sports Hall of Fame members at the 17th Annual Awards event.
The City of Piggott was saddened by the loss of former Chief of Police Jeremi Wicker, Sunday, Aug. 24, at the age of 48.
The Clay County Fair will be held Tuesday through Saturday, Sept. 9 through 13, at the fairgrounds in Piggott. Keeping with recent tradition, the annual pageants will be held in conjunction with the fair Saturday, Sept. 6, beginning at 9:30 a.m. with the Baby Mr. and Miss Clay County pageants, and will continue throughout the day. The Piggott City Council met in regular session on Monday, Aug. 25 with council members Jeff Benbrook, Tracy Cole and Jamey Parks present. Mayor Bradley Scheffler was absent.
The Ford Room audience knew all the songs played by newly named band Southern Grace who performed for a satisfied group who had just dined on huge pork steak, slaw, baked beans, deviled eggs, tea, and dessert. Charlie Cooper took the microphone early in the show and Terry Rousch performed with both keyboard and guitar. Gary Cremeens led the band and provided percussion excellence. Steve Goins continued to impress audiences with vocals and tremendous guitar skills. Brent Long played bass guitar and sang “Silver Wings” to show that the entire band can sing and play.
A fundraising event will be held at Sugar Creek Country in Piggott, hosted by the Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum and Educational Center, in conjunction with a reading retreat. Tickets are available for the club reception, featuring special guest Tim Huffman, an esteemed outdoor writer with 37 years of experience and native of Piggott.

Runners and walkers are being recruited for the annual Rector Labor Day 5K Run/Walk, set for 8 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 30. The event, which benefits the RHS Helping Hands Foundation, will begin in front of the Rector High School gymnasium.
The City of Piggott recently welcomed a new permanent Drug Take Back Box as part of the Arkansas Drug Take Back initiative.
In keeping with event tradition, a full slate of pageants will be held in conjunction with the 2025 edition of the Rector Labor Day Picnic. This year’s pageants are scheduled for both Sunday, Aug. 31, and Monday, Sept. 1 Pageant organizer Jade Simpson noted that the Petite Miss, Preteen Miss and Junior Miss Rector pageants are closed to Rector students only until Aug. 26. “If we do not have enough participants by the deadline, we will then open the pageants to others,” commented Simpson. Registration will be 30 minutes prior to start time for anyone who is not pre-registered.
