Property, zoning issues dominate Rector City Council meeting
Property issues and zoning issues dominated the City Council meeting on Thursday, June 12 at the Rector Community Center. Terri Shultz and Ivan Jones who live in the Greenville/ 8th Street/7th Street neighborhood addressed City Council regarding the conditions of overgrown yards, debris, and vermin infestation in the area due to dilapidated, unoccupied houses and absent homeowners. “No one lives in the houses. The former residents have left the area or are deceased. The grass is taller than I am,” commented Schultz, “and now Ivan and I have seen rats.” Noting not only the unsightly mess but the health risk for citizens, Shultz asked for some kind of help in remedying the situation. She stated that Jones would mow if the area in question did not have pipes jutting above the ground similar to the ones that ruined the deck on his mower in the attempt to mow previously.

Rector Cougar 4-H members excel at District O’Rama
Arkansas 4-H hosted its annual District O’Rama events this week, and members from across the Delta District came together to compete and showcase their talents. Clay County, which is part of the Delta District, was proudly represented by the Rector Cougar 4-H Club.
Woolard, Gossett named to UT Martin’s springChancellor’s Honor Roll
MARTIN, Tenn.—The outstanding academic achievements of undergraduate students at the University of Tennessee at Martin have been honored with publication of the Spring 2025 Chancellor’s Honor Rolls for the College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences, College of Business and Global Affairs, College of Education, Health, and Behavioral Sciences, College of Engineering and Natural Sciences and the College of Humanities and Fine Arts. Among those named were Olivia G. Woolard of Piggott, high honors and Riley J. Gossett of Pollard, honors.
Traffic stop leads to drug arrests
Two individuals were arrested on drug charges following a traffic stop on Hwy. 139, according to the sheriff’s department.
Rector club shines at County 4-H O’Rama
The Rector Cougar 4-H Club made an outstanding showing at the County 4-H O’Rama held on Monday, May 19. Several club members competed in a variety of categories, bringing home top honors and earning the opportunity to represent Clay County at the upcoming District O’Rama.
Piggott City Council hears update on hospital
The Piggott City Council met on Tuesday, May 27 with council members Jeff Benbrook, Tracy Cole and Jamey Parks present. Council member Kevin Jones was absent. Minutes and financials were accepted.
Local schools to participate in USDA Summer Feeding program
Once again this year, both the Piggott and Rector School Districts are taking part in the USDA Summer Feeding program. Under the federally- funded effort, all those under the age of 18 are provided free meals at local schools. The meals are the same for all children regardless of family income, race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability. No registration is required for those attending.
