The Piggott High School cafeteria was packed on Monday, July 28 as a large crowd of athletes, parents and teachers showed up for the yearly “Beat the Heat” meeting held for those students participating in outdoor events.
Three Clay County 4-H members showcased their talents and determination at the 2025 State 4-H O-Rama held at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville on July 21 through 24. The four-day event, themed “Clover Quest: A Gathering of Champions,” brought together youth from across the state for competitions, workshops, tours, and fun-filled activities.
Piggott Health System recently announced Shelly Samples, RN, as its new Director of Nursing. With a career spanning over 30 years—beginning in the hospital’s own Medical Records department—Samples brings a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to patient-centered care.
Extreme heat greeted visitors to the annual St. Francis Picnic, held Saturday, July 19, to benefit the Hall and Gravel Hill cemeteries. In response, good crowds gathered for the popular mid-summer event.
The 95th edition of the annual Greenway Picnic, held each year to fund the continued upkeep of the beautiful Mitchell Cemetery, is set for this Saturday, Aug. 2, at the community’s picnic grounds. As usual, the 2025 picnic will officially kick off at 9 a.m. with the opening ceremonies on the grandstand, and activities will continue throughout the day. In keeping with tradition, there will be food stands, games, bingo, novelties and rides for the kids. A corn hole tournament with beginners and advance brackets is set for 11 a.m. east of the grandstand. There will be live entertainment throughout the day by JR Rogers and the All-Star Band.
Organizers with the Fifth and Pine Church of Christ in Rector will host their annual “Back to School with Love Day” from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 3.

Piggott High School will host new student registration for the upcoming school year from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 4 Parent/guardian must bring their student’s birth certificate, social security number, and two proof of residency (utility bill, etc. postmarked within the last 60 days).
On Saturday, July 12, 4-H members from across Clay County came together for one of the most anticipated events of the year—the annual 4-H Pool Party. Held as a way to beat the summer heat and build friendships across club lines, the event brought together members from the Bobcat Club, Piggott Livestock Club, Rector Cougar Club, Tech Changemakers, and the Clay County Leadership group for an evening of fun, laughter, and connection.
