Rector baseball and softball teams have been successful lately in defeats of BIC Mustangs and Bay Yellowjackets in quick succession on the home diamonds. Both teams had hot bats and showed strong base running and quick steals to get into scoring positions. Hits that dropped just right into the gap, just left of the right field line allowed base hits for the batter and quick scores for the base runners.

Double-headers dominated the softball fare recently, the games played on pretty prespring afternoons at the Rector Sports Complex. Cross County and Marmaduke brought the competition for Rector Lady Cougars. On Monday, March11 the Cross County Thunderbirds hit and fielded well but the Lady Cougars circled the bases for an 8 – 5 game-one victory. The second game resulted in an 18 – 17 loss for the Lady Cougars in extra innings.
Rector Cougar baseball returns pitcher, catcher, powerful new varsity talent, and leadership. With that mix, the Cougars will be “in the mix for post-season accolades,” according to Sports Information publications.
The Osceola Seminoles traveled to Piggott for a double-header on Monday, March 11. Junior, Will Lucas started off strong on the mound for the Mohawks, striking out the first two batters and getting the third batter out with a ground ball to second baseman, Marcus Blascoe.
On Monday, March 4, the Piggott Mohawks hosted former head baseball coach, Shawn Hearn and his Blytheville Chickasaws. Lawson Tompkins started on the mound for Piggott with Walker Johnson as his battery mate.
The Williams Baptist University baseball team took its first wins over an NCAA Division I opponent since the 2001 season in a doubleheader sweep of Mississippi Valley State on Thursday night, March 7, by the final scores of 12-3 and 7-3.
The Piggott Mohawks hosted the Rector Cougars on a windy Monday afternoon in both teams’season opener. The game was all Cougars from start to finish as the Mohawks struggled with pitching and had a hard time getting a bat on the ball against Rector’s pitching.
