William F. “Bill” McHaffey

William F. “Bill” McHaffey, 62, of Greenway, Ark., passed away August 26, 2022, at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center in Poplar Bluff, Mo., after a short battle with carcinoid cancer.

He was born on July 6, 1960, in Kennett, Mo., and was the son of the late C.G. “Mack” and Mary Helen (Garrard) McHaffey.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, John McHaffey.

Bill was the Mayor of Greenway for many years. He also worked for the Clay County Road Department and worked several other jobs over his many years, including the Piggott School District and Cox Lumber Company. Every year you could find him at the Greenway Picnic running the balloon stand. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, drinking beer, and being with his dog Apollo. He was a history buff who enjoyed watching documentaries and learning about local and family history. He loved being around his friends and family especially his grandson, Steel, who was his pride and joy.

William is survived by his two children, Elizabeth “Betsy” McHaffey and Dexter Bostic of Greenway, and Claburn McHaffey and wife McKenzie of Chesterfield, Mo.; his beloved grandson, Steel; brother, Jim McHaffey and wife Patty of Greenway; sister, Becky Whitehorn and husband Gary of Byhalia, Miss.; sister-in-law, Loretta McHaffey of Piggott; nieces, JoAnn Rowland and husband Brian and Tonya May; nephew, Bubba McHaffey and wife Ashley; great nieces and nephews, Ben, Maddi, Dawson, and Gracie; and many other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, September 3, 2022, at Hoggard & Sons Funeral Home in Piggott. Funeral service will follow at 4 p.m. at Hoggard & Sons Chapel with Bro. Neil Smith officiating. A private family burial will be held at Mitchell Cemetery in Greenway at a later date. Hoggard & Sons Funeral Home of Piggott is in charge of the arrangements.
